We focus exclusively on family law matters, including divorce, custody and visitation, child support, spousal support (alimony), property division, prenuptial agreements, and modifications or enforcement of existing court orders.
At least one spouse must have lived in Virginia for six months before filing for divorce. If you or your spouse meet this requirement, you can file in Virginia.
The timeline depends on your situation. An uncontested divorce can sometimes be finalized in a few months, while contested cases involving disputes over custody, support, or property may take significantly longer.
Uncontested divorce: Both parties agree on all major issues, such as property division, custody, and support.

The court considers the “best interests of the child.” Factors include the child’s needs, each parent’s role in the child’s life, the willingness of each parent to support the child’s relationship with the other parent, and any history of abuse or neglect.
