FAQs
We focus exclusively on family law matters, including divorce, custody and visitation, child support, spousal support (alimony), property division, prenuptial agreements, and modifications or enforcement of existing court orders.
At least one spouse must have lived in Virginia for six months before filing for divorce. If you or your spouse meet this requirement, you can file in Virginia.
The timeline depends on your situation. An uncontested divorce can sometimes be finalized in a few months, while contested cases involving disputes over custody, support, or property may take significantly longer.
Uncontested divorce: Both parties agree on all major issues, such as property division, custody, and support.
Contested divorce: One or more issues are disputed and may require negotiation, mediation, or a trial.
The court considers the “best interests of the child.” Factors include the child’s needs, each parent’s role in the child’s life, the willingness of each parent to support the child’s relationship with the other parent, and any history of abuse or neglect.
Virginia uses guidelines based on both parents’ incomes, the number of children, and custody arrangements. Other expenses, such as health insurance and childcare, may also be factored in.
Spousal support is not automatic. Courts consider the length of the marriage, each spouse’s financial resources, earning capacity, contributions to the marriage, and other circumstances before making a decision.
Yes. If there has been a material change in circumstances—such as a job loss, relocation, or changes in a child’s needs—you may request a modification of custody or support orders.
Not always. Many family law cases are resolved through negotiation, mediation, or settlement agreements. If an agreement cannot be reached, a judge will decide.
Costs vary depending on the complexity of the case and whether it is contested. During your consultation, we can discuss our fees, retainers, and billing practices so you know what to expect.
Yes, we offer initial consultations to discuss your situation, explain your options, and help you understand the next steps.
Family law issues can have long-term financial and personal consequences. An experienced attorney can help you understand your rights, negotiate on your behalf, and advocate for your interests in court if needed.
At our firm, we take a different approach to family law. We believe in working as a team with our clients—listening, strategizing, and making decisions together. By maintaining a smaller caseload, we’re able to devote the time and attention each case deserves, ensuring that every client feels supported and heard. We also understand that family law matters can be financially stressful, so we offer flexible options to help make quality representation accessible when it’s needed most
